Young, gifted and red

These works by Russian artist Pavel Pepperstein come with a lot of esoteric, theoretical and conceptual discourse attached - which we won't trouble you with here. All you need to know is that Pepperstein relates his work to the difficulties facing contemporary art's status in post-communist Russia. Fortunately, the result is the kind of thing seen here: wry, colourful and fun. It's a dreaming kind of art, more aligned to Russian themes of fairy stories, myths, and traditional illustration than to the usual stuff of contemporary art practice - and seems all the better for it.
